Stage Performance edition by Livingston Taylor Arts Photography eBooks Reviews
If you want to "entertain" an audience, Liv can tell you how to do it. This book is concise, entertaining, and a MUST read. The author provides some real-world reality checks, shows you how to engage the audience, and does it all with humility and good humour. It is truly unfortunate that the book is out of print. It shouldn't be.
Buy it, if you can find it. Borrow a copy, check the library, but definately READ this one! It is short, to the point, and it is even a FUN read! I would sell my copy to you, but I want keep it so that I can read it again!

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to perform on the stage, and not just singers or musicians.
I had looked for a while for a book on the performance part of performing, but the field is a bit light on. There are stacks of books about playing, singing, stagecraft and so on, but very few that look at the heart of the performance itself.
This is the exception & it is an exceptional read. It delivers in many dimensions what is needed to take a good performer to become a great performer.
I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you Livingston Taylor for taking the time to present this oft overlooked topic in such a unique & useful way.
It's got suggestions and info so useful, I'll probably read it once or twice more!
The book has some genuine and heartfelt advice for all musicians who perform regularly on stage. Livingston Taylor has enormous experience as a musician/performer and he has put together the learnings from his experiences into the book. He covers several important areas of stage performance - viewing the the audience as an ally, being aware and friendly, tackling difficult audience situations, your body language effectively on stage etc. As a performer, I could relate to most of the examples and on stage issues covered by him. He also talks about contracts, PR, concert etiquette and other topics that are of importance to musicians. I have started applying some of the principles and tips given in the book to my performances, and the results have been great. Get the book if you're a regular stage performer! Not only will it help you enjoy your performances, it might just make you a better person too!
This is by FAR the best book on the subject I've ever read (and I've read a ton of them.)
The lessons taught in this book are valuable for any entertainer, whether you're a musician, magician, comedian etc.
Livingston Taylor is an amazing teacher that takes time to explain in a way that makes you feel enlightened.
His live performances are chalked with examples of what he teaches so you can see it in action.
I bought this on because I let other people borrow my softbound copy and I never got it back. This happened three times but I can't be mad because if there was a gift I would want to give another entertainer it would be this book.
Thank you, Livingston for changing my perspective from the stage.
When I saw the announcement that a revised edition of Stage Performance was being released I pre-ordered my copy. My hope was that is would be just as informative and inspiring as the class I took from Livingston Taylor a few years back at the Berklee College of Music. A wonderful surprise came when I started reading and realized that the book is the stage performance class. I felt like I was sitting and listening to Liv perform his gentle lectures about a career in the music business, complete with his natural humor and stories from a lifetime of performing.
This book couldn't have come at a better time for me. I took it with me as I embarked on my first west coast tour with another singer-songwriter friend of mine. I actually read the book aloud while she drove, pausing to discuss sections that related to our current situations. It was amazing that everything we were going through was right there in the book. We were relieved to know that our problems were not unique and all performers experience these growing pains. Each chapter ended with a "please remember" and a smile on our faces.
I highly recommend this book to any performer. It's an easy read with lots of advice. Keep it handy because you'll want to check in from time to time for the inspiration alone.
Although this book was mainly written for musicians, it is a good resource for anyone that performs on stage. I found it very helpful and insightful and recommend it to anyone who performs in public and wants to better their onstage persona. Liv shares his personal experiences and wants you to learn and benefit from his mistakes. He teaches us to be honest with the audience and ourselves and offers many teaching moments.
